La Casa Verde - Merida, Yucatan

Two blocks from the elegant Boulevard of Paseo Montejo bordering the hotel zone, walking distance to the colorful Plaza Principal, close to historic Santa Ana and other well-shaded parks, all with shops and a number of excellent restaurants, sits the charming, one of a kind, turn of the century CASA VERDE.

This historic home, combines the unique beauty of it’s stately past with the reliability of completely renovated plumbing, water and electrical systems, as well as architectural additions for comfortable living. Almost entirely a free standing structure, this spacious home and outdoor property catch the cooling breezes so welcome in the tropics.

One enters through one of the many antique cedar doors, all of which are screened, to a high ceiling entry hall with antique pasta tiles; cedar windows flood the entry with light and views of the front garden. The hall leads either to the front parlor (now used as an artist studio),the formal dining room( now used as an office) or to the high ceiling sala (living room) with six sets of double doors opening to the front garden and covered ramada facing one of the largest private pools in Centro.

The simplicity of the ample gourmet kitchen is the dream of the home chef with large pantry closets, large smooth concrete prep and breakfast island and counters and new appliances surrounded with more storage and entrance to a convenient laundry area. The downstairs level has two guest rooms each with bathrooms, stone sinks and energy efficient toilets. All water is heated and powered by solar energy.
Ascending the stairs to the master suite, one arrives at the tiled foyer leading either to the palm lined front terrace, the large dressing room and bath area or the bedroom itself. From the bedroom one can descend to the pool area across an upper terrace.

The property itself, although totally walled, feels expansive with the large patio, partially covered pool, monolithic outdoor shower, and three car garage/workshop. Tropical plantings surround the pool and to the rear is a large bodega or storage room.

The intention of the architect and designer was to highlight the original beauty of this home as well as bring it into the 21st. century. Already it is an excellent private residence but it offers great potential as a Bed and Breakfast or boutique hotel with both terraces ready for additional gardens or construction.
